Friendship beyond
the presidency.
A simple idea in a Southampton clubhouse became an association connecting Hampshire’s bowling community.
It started with a conversation
In 1953, past presidents from Atherley Bowling Club and the Southampton area met over drinks after a meeting. They felt that time together should also be about enjoying each other’s company, beyond administration and committee business.
They decided to meet socially, forming the 1953 Presidents Club. Mr P Journeaux was elected its first President and remained in office for five years.
The first friendly match followed in July 1956, against Bournemouth & District Bowling Association. A six-rink match against the Isle of Wight County Bowling Association at J S White Ltd in Cowes followed in 1957.
After that match, a report in the Southern Daily Echo referred to the past presidents. The club adopted the name Hampshire Bowling Clubs Past Presidents Association, reflecting its wish to welcome members across the county.
The same purpose today
The association exists to encourage fellowship through bowls. That purpose remains at the heart of friendly games and social gatherings, and is celebrated with a toast at the annual luncheon.
Membership connects people who have served their clubs and the wider game, including presidents of outdoor and indoor clubs.
